Where Winds Meet Cloud Steps: Echoes in the Shrine Guide

This is the whole underground shrine route, not just the one-line skill location. Use it to start Jianghu Legacy 02, clear every fire-and-barrel gate, collect Cloud Steps before the staircase, and finish the three-kowtow statue room.

Pinned answer

Inspect the corpse at the foot of the stairs before moving on.

Track Jianghu Legacy 02, Echoes in the Shrine, and follow Zhang San beneath General's Shrine. After using fire arrows and an explosive barrel to open the underground route, go through the next door and examine the corpse at the foot of the long staircase. That corpse gives Cloud Steps.

Quest

Jianghu Legacy 02: Echoes in the Shrine

Skill checkpoint

Corpse before the long staircase

Final puzzle

Kowtow three times at the statue

Lingyun Step and Lingyun Ta are older names for 淩雲踏. The current Global client calls the skill Cloud Steps and the older Huangci Anying / 荒祠暗影 route Echoes in the Shrine. Use the Global names in menus; keep the old names only for search and source matching.

Unlock route

Start at General's Shrine, take Cloud Steps halfway down, then finish the statue room.

  1. 1

Unlock and track Echoes in the Shrine

Talk to the Wayfarer of Verdant Wilds to open Jianghu Legacy 02. In the Exploration menu, inspect Echoes in the Shrine from the Jianghu Legacy tab and begin tracking it.

  2. 2

Wake Zhang San and inspect the booklet

Go to General's Shrine and approach the kneeling man at the entrance. Zhang San ignores the first interaction; wait for him to collapse, speak to him again, and choose either wake-up response. Pick up and inspect the booklet he drops. There is also a chest behind the general's statue before you descend.

  3. 3

Break the suspicious floor with Mighty Drop

Follow the booklet clue to the cracked floor near the shrine entrance. A normal interaction does nothing: jump above the marked slab and use Mighty Drop to smash through into the underground route.

  4. 4

Activate the Boundary Stone and take fire arrows

Walk down the corridor to the first room, activate the Boundary Stone, and open the nearby chest for fire arrows. Burn the vines to expose the passage; keep fire arrows equipped because the next rooms reuse them.

  5. 5

Light the oil lamp and burn the next vines

Light the oil lamp in the corridor, clear the bandits, loot the chest, and burn the next vine barrier. Farther in, shoot the vines holding the bridge so it drops into place.

  6. 6

Use the fixed barrels to open the treasure room

From the high ground, shoot the explosive barrels below. The blast clears bandits and breaks the wall beside them, exposing a treasure room. A Hero's Tomb nearby provides a heal before the next section.

  7. 7

Carry the portable barrel to the marked wall

After crossing the lowered bridge, operate the machine to produce a small explosive barrel. Pick it up, place it against the blocked wall, step back, and ignite it with a fire arrow. Shoot the barrels visible beyond the opening before entering.

  8. 8

Take Cloud Steps before climbing the long staircase

Pass through the opened route and burn the vines on the right if you want the side chest. At the next door, stop at the foot of the long staircase and examine the corpse. This interaction teaches Cloud Steps; it is not the quest-completion reward.

  9. 9

Defeat Zhang Lang and read the tablet

Climb the stairs, push through the door, and clear the underground shrine. Use the room's explosive barrels against the bandits, defeat Zhang Lang, then read the tablet beside the general's statue. Check the chest by the statue and the chest on the upper-right floor.

  10. 10

Kowtow three times to move the statue

Stand on the mat in front of the statue and use Kowtow three times. The statue moves aside and reveals a hidden box behind it. Reading the tablet first keeps the puzzle's intent clear, but the answer is simply three kowtows.

  11. 11

Loot the exit route and pay respects upstairs

Follow the quest marker toward the ladder. Check the chest behind the rubble, the chest before the ladder, and the chest after climbing. Open the door back into the main shrine and pay respects to the general to close the current Global route.

Global and older guides

Older route-only threadThe older Chinese route also records Xiao Shitou and a cuju-ball return after the shrine. Current English walkthroughs do not list that thread as a required completion step, so only follow it if those NPC and item prompts appear in your client.

Troubleshooting and use

Most failed runs are one missed action: Mighty Drop, fire arrows, the carried barrel, the corpse, or three kowtows.

Echoes in the Shrine is missing

Speak to the Wayfarer of Verdant Wilds first. Then open Exploration, Jianghu Legacy, inspect entry 02, and track it to reveal the route.

Zhang San will not talk

Interact once, wait for him to collapse at the shrine entrance, then speak again. The first refusal is part of the scripted start.

I cannot find the underground entrance

Inspect the booklet Zhang San drops, follow its clue to the cracked slab near the entrance, jump above it, and use Mighty Drop. Standing on it or pressing the normal interaction button will not open it.

The vines or bridge still block the route

Take fire arrows from the chest beside the first underground Boundary Stone. Use them on vine barriers, the oil lamp, and the vines suspending the bridge; ordinary arrows do not solve those gates.

The portable barrel did not break the wall

Operate the nearby machine, carry the small barrel all the way to the blocked wall, set it down against the wall, retreat, then ignite it with a fire arrow. The fixed barrels in the previous room solve a different wall and treasure room.

I finished the dungeon but missed Cloud Steps

Backtrack to the long stairway inside the underground shrine. The skill comes from a corpse at the foot of the stairs before the next combat area, not from the final chest or quest completion screen.

The general's statue will not move

Read the tablet after defeating Zhang Lang, stand on the mat directly in front of the statue, and perform Kowtow three times. One bow is not enough, and the normal interact prompt does not replace the emote.

An old guide tells me to return a cuju ball

That is a legacy 荒祠暗影 side thread involving Xiao Shitou. It is not listed in the current Global completion route. Return it if the child and item prompt exist in your client, but do not treat it as the reason the statue puzzle or Cloud Steps pickup failed.

Type

Offensive and puzzle skill

Cloud Steps has separate exploration and combat uses, so it is more than a normal damage slot.

Exploration

High leap and marked jumps

Outside combat it helps reach elevated or marked positions that are awkward with ordinary movement.

Combat

Shoulder stomp

In combat it stomps a target and is especially relevant against cavalry or enemies with Unstable Poise.

Quest payout

45 Echo Jade in the current route total

The current English quest reference also lists exploration, EXP, Coins, tomes, iron, and Oscillating Jade across the full route. Reward totals remain patch-sensitive.
