Eight early mistakes that have a visible cost: choosing a one-way difficulty without reading it, parrying the wrong cue, ignoring Qi, farming finished gear too early, leaving the map closed, and turning every detour into a build crisis.

A first character is not ruined because you tested the wrong weapon. The mistakes that repeatedly cost time are easier to name: treating Legend as a normal switchable mode, trying to parry yellow attacks, ignoring the Qi and Execute loop, optimizing random gear before choosing a Martial Art, skipping Wayfarers and Boundary Stones, taking preventable fall injuries, and waiting in real time for a normal quest clock gate.

Optimizing before choosing a Martial Art

Do not pick Legend only because it is missable. It is available only during character creation; lowering it is allowed, but returning to Legend is not. Choose it for the challenge and identifiers, not from fear of an incomplete checklist.

Run this check before spending, restarting, or blaming the build.

Confirm what your difficulty choice actually allows
Story, Recommended, and Expert can be changed in Settings. Legend is a start-only option and becomes unavailable after you lower it. A hard fight is not proof your character needs to be restarted.

Separate dodge cues from parry cues
Dodge yellow-glint attacks. Parry ordinary attacks and time a red-glint parry near impact for the counter. Pressing on the first flash is often too early.

Check Qi before judging your damage
If an enemy feels durable, look at its Qi bar. Deplete it, use the Exhausted window, and Execute before the opening ends. If your own Qi empties, stop forcing attacks and recover your defense.

Open the map before following distant route text
Talk to the region Wayfarer at the campfire icon, then activate Boundary Stones on your path. A route is much harder to follow when the region is still covered and no return point is active.

Fix the real bottleneck before spending
Equip stronger raw-stat drops and upgrade the systems you already use. Only start set, substat, or Inner Way optimization after a Martial Art has earned the investment through actual play.

Parrying as soon as red appears

Wait for the strike to approach, then parry.

The color warns you what is coming; the weapon's impact timing still decides the parry.

Ignoring enemy Qi

Break Qi, use the Exhausted window, then Execute.

Health-only pressure misses the combat system's main burst opportunity.

Farming a perfect early set

Equip higher raw stats and keep testing your weapon.

Sets and tuned substats matter later; early drops are replaced quickly and your preferred Martial Art may change.

Walking past Boundary Stones

Activate them while the route already passes nearby.

They become fast-travel points and remove repeat travel from later quests and collection routes.

Dropping without Mighty Drop

Use the plunge input before landing.

A preventable fall can cause injury and turn a short shortcut into a healing detour.

Waiting for a normal quest hour

Open Time and move the clock forward.

The in-game clock advances ordinary time-of-day gates, though it does not override real-time limited content.

Problem fixes

When the mistake has already happened, recover without restarting.

I chose Legend and regret it

Open Menu > Settings > Game > Combat Difficulty and lower it. The character remains usable and story progress continues. The only one-way consequence is that Legend cannot be selected again on that character.

I spent materials on a weapon I dislike

Stop adding resources and test another Martial Art with naturally dropped gear. Early investment is a setback, not a dead account; the useful question is which remaining materials are scarce enough to protect.

My block suddenly stopped working

Check your Qi bar and the attack color. An empty Qi bar leaves you Exhausted, while a yellow-glint move bypasses normal defense. Recover Qi or dodge instead of repeating the same input.

An old guide's place or skill name does not exist

Search the Chinese name or older translation in the site glossary, then use the current Global page. Do not assume a missing literal translation means the route was removed.

Readable beats rare

A missable mode is not automatically the right beginner mode.

Can I change difficulty in Where Winds Meet?

Story, Recommended, and Expert can be changed from Menu > Settings > Game > Combat Difficulty. Legend can only be selected at character creation, and lowering it removes the option permanently for that character.

Can yellow attacks be parried?

No. Yellow-glint attacks are unblockable and should be dodged. Red-glint attacks are the ones that reward a correctly timed parry with a counter.

Did I ruin my character by upgrading the wrong weapon?

No. Stop further spending, equip naturally dropped gear, and test another Martial Art. Protect scarce resources going forward instead of restarting over an early experiment.

Why should I activate Boundary Stones?

They grant exploration progress and become fast-travel points. Activating them on your normal route prevents repeated travel when quests or collection guides send you back.

Can I skip waiting for a quest time?

For ordinary time-of-day gates, open Time from the main menu and move the clock forward. This does not advance real-time limited quests or interactions.
