Where Winds Meet First Hour Checklist

A low-regret opening route for the first hour in Qinghe: choose a readable difficulty, learn the two combat bars, follow the Main Chapter, open fast travel, and delay build farming until you have tested a Martial Art.

Pinned answer

Follow the yellow story marker, but stop for systems that save time.

Begin in Qinghe and follow the gleaming yellow Main Chapter marker until the combat tutorial and core menus are open. Learn how Health, Qi, parry, dodge, and Execute fit together; activate every nearby Wayfarer and Boundary Stone; equip the strongest raw-stat gear you already own; and test Martial Arts before committing upgrade materials. One clear route is more useful than clearing every icon in sight.

Delay

Set farming and substat optimization

Legend difficulty can only be selected during character creation. You may lower it later, but you cannot return to Legend on that character. Story, Recommended, and Expert can be changed from Menu > Settings > Game > Combat Difficulty.

Action plan

A useful first hour in six stops.

  1. 1

Choose a difficulty you can actually read

Recommended is the balanced default. Story adds more help, while Expert removes Assist Deflection. Pick Legend only if the start-only challenge and its identifiers matter to you; do not select it because a checklist says it is missable.

  2. 2

Finish the combat tutorial and watch both Qi bars

Your Qi is the guard or stagger bar: when it empties, you become Exhausted and cannot defend normally. Enemy Qi works the same way. Parry or pressure an enemy until its Qi reaches zero, use the opening, then trigger Execute before the Exhausted window closes.

  3. 3

Learn the yellow and red attack cues

A yellow-glint attack is unblockable and should be dodged. A red-glint attack rewards a correctly timed parry with a counter. React near impact rather than pressing the moment the color first appears.

  4. 4

Follow the Main Chapter until the next system opens

The yellow objective marker carries the Qinghe story forward and opens the systems that later guides assume you have. Take short side stops, but return to the chapter when a menu, region, or activity is still locked.

  5. 5

Reveal the map and activate fast travel as you pass

Visit the campfire-style Wayfarer marker to reveal a region, then activate nearby Boundary Stones. These are not completionist chores: the Wayfarer makes the map readable and Boundary Stones become fast-travel points.

  6. 6

Test one Martial Art before spending heavily

Equip the best raw-stat gear already in your bag and learn one weapon rhythm. Notice attack recovery, parry comfort, range, and survival. Specific sets, random substats, and a full Inner Way build can wait until you know which Martial Art you want to keep using.

Decision table

Use the cue in front of you instead of opening another tier list.

Yellow weapon glint

Dodge the attack.

Yellow attacks are unblockable; trying to parry them creates a false timing problem.

Red weapon glint

Wait for the strike, then parry near impact.

A successful red-attack parry triggers a stronger counter opportunity.

Enemy Qi reaches zero

Use the Exhausted opening, then Execute before it ends.

Execute deals the large payoff damage; using it instantly can waste part of the free attack window.

Campfire / Wayfarer icon

Speak with the Wayfarer.

This reveals the surrounding region and makes later route markers easier to read.

Boundary Stone

Activate it while you are nearby.

It grants exploration progress and becomes a fast-travel point for return trips.

A higher-stat early item drops

Equip it if it improves the raw stats you use.

Early progression does not require farming a finished set or perfect random substats.

A quest asks you to wait

Open Time from the main menu and move the clock forward.

Normal time-of-day quest gates can be skipped forward; the clock does not replace real time for limited events.

Problem fixes

Four first-hour problems with a direct next move.

Regular enemies are taking too long

Check whether you are only damaging Health. Parry or pressure the enemy Qi bar, use the Exhausted opening, and finish with Execute. Also equip stronger raw-stat gear and keep your Martial Art and gear slots upgraded as those systems open.

Combat is too hard to read

Lower Combat Difficulty or enable Assist Deflection on Story or Recommended. Expert and Legend remove that help, and multiplayer also disables the assist behavior.

The map is still covered

Find the campfire-style Wayfarer marker for that region and speak with the NPC. Boundary Stones provide travel points, but the Wayfarer is what reveals the larger map area.

I am afraid of missing every side icon

Activate travel points and collect nearby materials, then return to the Main Chapter. Side Stories, Oddities, Outposts, and mini-games remain useful later; the first hour does not need a 100% route.

Gear

Raw stats first

Use what drops naturally before farming sets and tuned substats.

Arts

Martial Art first

Weapon playstyle determines which Inner Ways and upgrades become relevant.

Exploration

Gather on the route

Plants, animals, and ore save a separate farming trip later.

Falls

Use Mighty Drop

Use the plunge input before landing to avoid fall damage and preventable injuries.

Sources and questions

Where the current rules came from, plus the next useful route.

What should I do first in Where Winds Meet?

Follow the yellow Main Chapter marker through Qinghe, learn the Qi and Execute loop, reveal the region with Wayfarers, activate Boundary Stones, and test one Martial Art before heavy spending.

Which difficulty should a beginner choose?

Recommended is the balanced default and Story adds more assistance. Choose Legend only if you knowingly want its start-only challenge; once you lower Legend, you cannot return to it.

Should I explore or follow the story first?

Do both in short loops. Follow the Main Chapter until needed systems open, activate Wayfarers and Boundary Stones along the path, and take nearby side activities without trying to clear the whole region immediately.

Should I upgrade my first gear set?

Equip stronger raw-stat drops and keep relevant slots upgraded, but delay set farming, tuned substats, and expensive optimization until you have chosen a Martial Art you enjoy.

What do yellow and red attacks mean?

Yellow-glint attacks are unblockable and should be dodged. Red-glint attacks can be perfectly parried for a counter when you react near impact.
