Use Solo/Co-op for invited friends, Online Mode for the public world, and the activity menu for shared rewards. Personal story progress is still personal.

Pinned answer

Pick the lane before inviting anyone.

fastest correct route

Specific friend: Solo/Co-op. Public world: Online. Story gate: Solo.

Most failed sessions begin with the wrong mode. Open the bamboo-hat Mode Switch, create a private Solo/Co-op room for a friend, and start bosses from their multiplayer-eligible activity page. Do not expect a guest to inherit the host's Main Chapter completion.

Invite a friend correctly

Specific friends

Solo/Co-op

Open a private room, then invite by friend entry, Player ID, or code.

Public world

Online

Use the shared social world for other players and online activities.

Main story

Usually solo

Do not plan a shared campaign around host progress.

Crossplay

Yes

Current platforms can play together inside the same server region.

Mode chooser

Solo, Solo/Co-op, Online, and matchmaking do different jobs.

Invite workflow

Create the room first; launch the activity second.

1

Confirm that multiplayer is actually unlocked

Look for the bamboo-hat Mode Switch or Fellowship entry. Players commonly report the unlock around early-story Level 10, but the public official pages do not publish one exact trigger. The live menu is the final check.

2

Open Mode Switch

Use the person-in-a-hat icon near the top of the HUD. Choose Solo/Co-op when you want a specific friend rather than a public shared world.

3

Invite the right player

Search the friend entry or exact Player ID, choose a recommended player, or exchange the current co-op code. Confirm the character name before sending the invite.

4

Wait for the room state

Do not start immediately. Confirm the visitor appears in the co-op panel and that both players are out of cutscenes, solo-only instances, and incompatible activities.

5

Launch from the correct activity menu

For a Campaign Challenge boss, start the challenge after the party exists. Do not assume walking a guest into a personal story objective creates shared completion.

6

Check the reward and progress result

Before disbanding, verify the claim prompt, quest state, and each player's own map or story progress. Activity rewards can be shared even when personal campaign progress is not.

Unlock wording

Search results often flatten the unlock to “Level 10.” Treat that as a useful early-game estimate, not a promise. If the Mode Switch is absent, advance the opening story and finish the current tutorial gate instead of grinding levels blindly.

Progress rules

Shared combat does not always mean shared account progress.

Online shared worldOnline ModeSocial and online activity stateUse this for public interaction and online systems, not as proof that a personal story quest will advance.

The safest test is visible and local: compare both quest logs, both claim prompts, and both map states. A party victory screen proves the fight ended; it does not prove every account flag advanced.

Party scale

There is no single player cap for every multiplayer activity.

read the live queue

Friend rooms, five-player domains, and ten-player bosses can all be “co-op.”

The official store markets play with up to four friends. That is not permission to force the same total onto every dungeon, raid, PvP queue, or seasonal mode. Read the current activity panel before building the party.

Friend co-op

Up to four friends

The official Steam description uses this wording. The active room UI still decides the actual capacity for the current context.

Campaign Challenge

Room first

Form the co-op room before opening the Campaign Challenge so the boss instance and reward lane are unambiguous.

Martial Path Domain

5 players

Version 1.8 describes this as a five-player coordination activity with Normal and Hard modes.

Ravening Banes

10 players

Version 1.8 lists a ten-player PvE mode unlocked at Lv. 91, with auto-match or a premade crew.

Cross-region latency rule

The July Dev AMA says the party leader manually selects the matchmaking server, and that choice also determines the combat node. Pick the leader for connection quality, not seniority. This changes one match location; it does not move anyone's home region or save.

Session planner

Start from the result the group actually wants.

Play the story side by side

Do solo story gates separately, then regroup for exploration and eligible fights.

Help with a campaign boss

Create the room first, then launch the Campaign Challenge version of the fight.

Explore with one friend

Use Solo/Co-op in the lower-progression player's world and check map progress individually.

Meet random players

Switch to Online Mode instead of opening a private visitor room.

Queue across regions

Let the party leader choose the matchmaking server with everyone's latency in mind.

Troubleshooting

Match the symptom before remaking the room.

Mode Switch or Fellowship is missing

Continue the opening story and tutorial until the multiplayer entry appears. Level 10 is a common player observation, not a published official hard gate.

Your friend does not appear in search

Recheck the exact Player ID, character name, server region, and online state. Platform crossplay does not make a different server region searchable as the same local roster.

Crossplay works on paper, but the invite fails

Confirm both players are in the same server region and are not inside a cutscene, solo-only instance, queue, or active challenge. Account linking and co-op invitations are separate systems.

The quest says Co-op Unavailable

Treat that objective as personal story progress. Leave the room, finish the blocked step in Solo Mode, then invite the party again.

The boss died, but the story did not advance

A co-op Campaign Challenge reward is not the same as completing the first-time story scene. Check which version of the boss you launched.

The guest is one-shotting everything or getting crushed

Use the lower-progression player's world when possible and inspect the host's difficulty or world state. Do not promise automatic level equalization.

A reward did not appear

Check the activity's claim cost, weekly state, prior-clear state, and reward prompt before replaying. Shared combat does not guarantee every personal or first-clear reward.

Cross-region matchmaking has severe latency

The July Dev AMA says the party leader's manual server selection controls the matchmaking and combat node. Change the leader's selection instead of rebuilding accounts or regions.

You cannot return to your own world

Open the co-op panel at the lower-left side and use the exit/disband action. Finish or leave the active instance first if the control is unavailable.

Quick answers

Where Winds Meet co-op and multiplayer FAQ.

What level unlocks co-op in Where Winds Meet?

Players commonly report the multiplayer entry around early-story Level 10, but the public official pages do not state one exact universal trigger. Continue the opening story until the bamboo-hat Mode Switch or Fellowship entry appears; that live UI is the reliable test.

How do I invite a friend in Where Winds Meet?

Open the bamboo-hat Mode Switch, choose Solo/Co-op, then invite from the friend or recommended list, search the exact Player ID, or use the current co-op code. Wait for the visitor to appear before launching an activity.

Can the full story be played in co-op?

No. Some quests and story instances require Solo Mode. Use co-op for eligible exploration, side content, challenges, bosses, dungeons, and online activities, then complete blocked personal story steps separately.

What is the difference between Solo/Co-op and Online Mode?

Solo/Co-op opens a private host world for invited visitors. Online Mode places you in the public shared-world layer with other players and online activities. Neither should be treated as a replacement for every personal story step.

Does Where Winds Meet co-op have crossplay?

Yes. The current platform family supports crossplay, but the official Xbox FAQ says crossplay and cross-progression apply within the same server region. Account binding is a separate issue from sending a co-op invite.

How many players can join co-op?

The official Steam description says you can team up with up to four friends. Individual modes set their own limits: Version 1.8, for example, names a five-player Martial Path Domain and a ten-player Ravening Banes mode.

Does guest progress count in co-op?

It depends on the activity. Eligible Campaign Challenge rewards can be shared, while Main Chapter and personal map or quest states should be checked on each account. Never infer shared story completion from a shared boss kill.

How do I leave co-op mode?

Use the exit or disband action in the lower-left co-op panel. If it is locked, leave the active challenge, cutscene, or queue first and try again.

Which server does a cross-region party use?

The official July Dev AMA says the party follows the leader's manually selected matchmaking server, and that node also hosts the combat. This does not transfer any character to another home region.

Sources and next routes

Current rules, UI reference, and the personal-progress boundary.

Co-op, Online Mode, crossplay, cross-progression, and cross-region matchmaking describe different systems. A successful invite proves that two players can meet; it does not prove that accounts merged, home regions changed, or story flags became shared.
