Where Winds Meet Best Starting Weapon and Build Guide

Pick the first weapon by the problem you want it to solve, not by a permanent tier-list promise. The safest general choice adds healing, the default sword already covers early damage, and every starting option can be obtained later.

Pinned answer

Choose Panacea Fan for the safest start; keep Nameless Sword for damage.

If you have no strong preference when Qi Shan offers a weapon, Panacea Fan is the most forgiving pick because it gives ranged attacks and healing. Your default Nameless Sword remains a capable damage weapon and later forms the Bellstrike - Splendor path with Nameless Spear. This is not a permanent lock: all starting choices can be obtained later, and weapon enhancement belongs to the equipped slot rather than the individual weapon.

Safest first pick

Panacea Fan for ranged healing and recovery

Ready DPS base

Nameless Sword is unlocked by default

Low-regret rule

All choices remain obtainable later

Qi Shan gives one weapon after you submit your first Oddity. Vernal Umbrella is the unusual choice because its later route requires Kaifeng, while the other listed starting options can be found in Qinghe. Pick it early only when you specifically want its ranged control style; otherwise Panacea Fan adds more immediate safety.

Build plan

Build a useful two-weapon route in six steps.

  1. 1

Choose a role before choosing a weapon

Decide whether the next ten hours need solo safety, direct melee damage, ranged control, healing and support, or tanking. A weapon is useful when its Martial Art solves that job; a tier letter without a role does not tell you how the character will play.

  2. 2

Keep Nameless Sword as the early damage baseline

Nameless Sword is available by default and mixes close attacks, movement, and ranged sword-wave pressure. It is Endurance-heavy when Shadow Step and charged actions are overused, so learn one short attack-and-disengage loop before deciding that the weapon is weak.

  3. 3

Use Qi Shan's choice to add what you lack

Choose Panacea Fan when healing and range would make progression safer. Choose Vernal Umbrella for ranged control and early access to a weapon otherwise obtained after reaching Kaifeng. Choose Nameless Spear for control and heavy opening damage, or Thundercry Blade for slower attacks, wide swings, and a tank direction.

  4. 4

Unlock the Martial Art, not just the weapon model

A weapon whose Martial Art has not been learned only provides basic attacks. Most Martial Arts come from joining a Sect or using Skill Theft. Before investing, open the Martial Arts screen and confirm that the active style, skills, role, and path are actually available.

  5. 5

Pair weapons that share a clear job

Natural starter routes include Nameless Sword plus Nameless Spear for Bellstrike - Splendor DPS, Panacea Fan plus Soulshade Umbrella for Silkbind - Deluge healing, Vernal Umbrella plus Inkwell Fan for Silkbind - Jade ranged DPS, and Thundercry Blade plus Stormbreaker Spear for Stonesplit - Might tanking. Hybrid pairs can work later, but they need a specific swap interaction to justify the mismatch.

  6. 6

Enhance slots and test one repeatable loop

Enhancement applies to the two weapon slots, so changing the weapon does not discard that slot level. Upgrade the active slots, then test the same encounter: opening skill, primary damage action, weapon swap purpose, defensive answer, and recovery window. Keep the route that you can execute reliably.

Choice table

Pick the first route that matches how you want to survive and deal damage.

No preference yet

Take Panacea Fan from Qi Shan and keep Nameless Sword equipped.

The Fan covers healing and safer range while the default Sword already supplies an early damage route.

Straightforward DPS

Start with Nameless Sword and work toward Nameless Spear.

They form the Bellstrike - Splendor DPS path; Sword handles mobility and pressure while Spear adds control and utility.

Solo survival

Use Panacea Fan as the recovery weapon beside your preferred damage style.

Healing is scarce early, and a ranged heal gives more room to learn enemy cues without abandoning damage entirely.

Ranged control

Choose Vernal Umbrella and later add Inkwell Fan.

Vernal Umbrella offers projectiles, control, and a projectile block; taking it early also avoids waiting for its later Kaifeng route.

Healer or support

Start Panacea Fan and plan for Soulshade Umbrella.

The pair forms the Silkbind - Deluge healer and support path instead of forcing a damage build to carry occasional healing.

Tank and heavy rhythm

Choose Thundercry Blade and later pair Stormbreaker Spear.

Thundercry favors slower, wider attacks and mitigation; the matching Stonesplit - Might path gives the route a defined tank job.

Choice feels wrong

Return to Nameless Sword, keep slot upgrades, and unlock the missing weapon later.

The first reward is not a permanent class lock, and slot-based enhancement keeps experimentation inexpensive.

Build fixes

Five early-build problems that do not require restarting.

The new weapon only has basic attacks

Owning a weapon is not the same as learning its Martial Art. Open Martial Arts and check the associated style. If it is locked, use its Sect or Skill Theft route before judging the weapon or upgrading build-specific systems.

Nameless Sword keeps draining Endurance

Stop repeating Shadow Step and charged actions without a recovery gap. Use a short Sword sequence, disengage, and let normal attacks or the second weapon cover the recovery window. Nameless Spear can later add control and Endurance utility.

Panacea Fan feels too slow at killing

Treat the Fan as the safety half of the loadout, not necessarily the main damage weapon. Heal or create space with it, then return to Nameless Sword or another learned damage Martial Art for the actual pressure window.

I copied a pair but never swap weapons

Give the second weapon one explicit job: healing, control, setup, defense, or a swap effect that persists. If it never enters the loop, the build is carrying upgrade costs without receiving the reason that pair was recommended.

A tier list changed after a patch

Keep the role and practiced loop, then recheck only the parts the patch changed. Current Global updates add Martial Arts and alter rankings, but a reliable path with learned skills and matching upgrades is usually more useful than rebuilding around every list revision.

Qi Shan pick

Add a missing function

Panacea adds healing; Vernal adds early ranged control; Spear and Blade open different combat rhythms.

Default weapon

Nameless Sword is viable

Its damage, mobility, and sword waves remain a real build base rather than a disposable tutorial weapon.

Weapon pair

Share a role or swap job

Matching paths are the easiest start; hybrids need a clear interaction that survives the swap.

Upgrade safety

Enhance the slot

Both weapon slots retain their enhancement level when a different weapon is equipped.

Sources and questions

Current rules, original articles, and the next useful route.

What is the best starting weapon in Where Winds Meet?

Panacea Fan is the safest general recommendation because it adds ranged healing while the default Nameless Sword already handles early damage. A different choice is reasonable when you already know you want ranged control, Spear utility, or a tank route.

Can you get the other starting weapons later?

Yes. The starting choice is not a permanent class lock. All listed options can be obtained later, although Vernal Umbrella's later route requires progress into Kaifeng while the others are available through Qinghe routes.

Is Nameless Sword worth using?

Yes. It provides damage, mobility, and ranged sword-wave pressure and forms the Bellstrike - Splendor DPS path with Nameless Spear. Its main beginner issue is careless Endurance use, not a lack of a real build route.

Why does my weapon have no Martial Art skills?

The weapon and its Martial Art are separate unlocks. Without the associated Martial Art, the weapon only supplies basic attacks. Check the Martial Arts screen and use the relevant Sect or Skill Theft route.

Do weapon upgrades transfer when I change weapons?

Yes. Enhancement applies to the equipped weapon slot rather than the individual weapon, so experimenting with another weapon in the same slot does not erase the slot level.
